Anagrams in word games and puzzles
Anagrams are the heart of many puzzles. A jumble puzzle is a set of anagrams to solve, and cryptic crossword clues often hide an anagram of the answer, signalled by words like mixed, broken or wild. In tile games, knowing that a rack like AEINRST can be rearranged into a long word is often worth a big bonus.
If you are stuck on a full jumble puzzle, the jumble solver handles all four words and the final answer. For tips on spotting anagrams yourself, read our guide to unscrambling tips and letter patterns.
Famous anagram pairs
Some anagram pairs are well known because the new words fit the old ones so neatly: LISTEN and SILENT, ASTRONOMER and MOON STARER, THE EYES and THEY SEE. Try them in the solver to see what else the letters can make.
Questions
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another one, using each letter exactly once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams, and so are DORMITORY and DIRTY ROOM.
Does the anagram solver use every letter?
Yes. Every result uses all of your letters, no more and no less. If you want shorter words made from some of the letters, use the letter unscrambler instead.
How are two-word anagrams chosen?
The solver tries every way to split your letters into two words and keeps pairs made of fairly common words, so the list stays readable. The best pairs, where both words are everyday words, come first.
Can I enter a phrase or a name?
Yes. Spaces, capitals and punctuation are ignored, so you can type a phrase or a name as it is written. Two-word anagrams are searched for inputs of up to 14 letters.
Which words are included?
The solver uses the public domain ENABLE word list, about 168,000 English words, with offensive words removed. Proper nouns such as names and places are not included.
